What Is a Wind Mitigation Inspection?

A wind mitigation inspection documents the features of your home that help it resist hurricane winds. The inspector fills out Florida's official form, the OIR-B1-1802 (Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form). You give it to your insurance company, which uses it to decide which wind discounts or credits apply to your policy.

  • The current version of the form took effect on April 1, 2026.
  • A completed form is generally valid for up to 5 years, as long as nothing material about the home changes.
  • Florida insurers must accept forms signed by qualified inspectors. These include licensed home inspectors with the required training, building code inspectors, licensed general, building or residential contractors, professional engineers and architects.

The 9 Things the Form Documents

  1. 1
    Building code

Which Florida Building Code the home was built under.

  2. 2
    Wind speed region

The design wind speed for your area (Miami-Dade and Broward counties are the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone).

  3. 3
    Roof slope
  4. 4
    Roof covering

The roof's product approval and the year it was installed.

  5. 5
    Roof deck attachment

How the roof deck is fastened to the framing.

  6. 6
    Roof-to-wall attachment

How the roof is tied to the walls, such as clips or straps.

  7. 7
    Roof shape

    Hip, flat or other.

  8. 8
    Secondary water resistance

A sealed roof deck that helps keep water out if the roof covering is damaged.

  9. 9
    Opening protection

Impact-rated or protected windows, entry doors, sliding doors, skylights and garage doors.

The form itself notes that some items may not qualify for a discount. Your insurer decides.

The Upgrades We Install

  • Impact windows and doors (opening protection). Miami-Dade approved impact windows, sliding doors and entry doors, installed under the Florida glass and glazing contractor license of Avrax Impact Windows & Doors Corp.
  • Roof replacement to current code. A new roof built to current Florida Building Code addresses the roof covering, roof deck attachment and secondary water resistance items.

Paperwork for your inspection. After the job, we give you the product approval (NOA) numbers and the permit information your inspector needs to document the upgrades.

How Much Will I Save?

It depends on your insurance company and your policy. Florida insurers must offer wind mitigation discounts and show them to policyholders, but the amount varies by company, home and coverage. Ask your insurance agent which discounts apply to you before you choose upgrades. We don't promise a dollar amount or a percentage.

What is the OIR-B1-1802 form?

It's Florida's official Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form. A qualified inspector fills it out to document your home's wind-resistant features, and your insurance company uses it to decide which discounts apply. The current version took effect April 1, 2026.

Will impact windows lower my insurance?

They can. Opening protection is one of the items on the form, and insurers must offer discounts for qualifying features. How much you save depends on your insurer and policy. Ask your agent before you decide.

How long is a wind mitigation inspection good for?

Generally up to 5 years, as long as nothing material about the home changes. If you replace the roof or add impact windows, a new inspection can document the upgrades.

Who can do the inspection?

Florida insurers must accept forms signed by qualified inspectors, including licensed home inspectors with the required training, building code inspectors, licensed general, building or residential contractors, professional engineers and architects.

Can I get help paying for these upgrades?

Florida's My Safe Florida Home program offers free inspections and, for eligible homeowners, grants for some upgrades. See our My Safe Florida Home page. Financing available for qualified customers through GreenSky, subject to credit approval.
